Both handle a large diameter mismatch between two different lines, but they're built for genuinely different pairings, and knowing which mismatch you're actually dealing with decides the answer here more than any strength comparison does.

The structural difference tracks the difference in what each one is built to join. The albright knot wraps around a folded loop, which is a general-purpose anchor that adapts to a wide range of pairings - wire to mono, heavy backing to light running line, more or less any two dissimilar lines that need bridging.

The nail knot instead wraps directly around the fly line itself, using a temporary tube or nail to hold an open channel for the wraps rather than a folded loop - a narrower-purpose construction built for exactly one job, attaching a leader butt straight to a fly line's coated end, and it stays low-profile precisely because there's no doubled loop material adding bulk.

The albright knot's failure mode is uneven compression on a large mismatch; the nail knot's failure mode is disturbing the wraps while removing the tube or nail used to form them. Why fly line without a factory loop still turns up

A modern substitute worth knowing about

Some anglers now use a tube-free variant of the nail knot tied with a needle or a length of hollow tubing purpose-made for the job, which can be somewhat easier to keep aligned than the traditional actual nail some older references call for - the core mechanism is identical, but the tool used to hold the wraps open during tying has genuinely improved over the decades since the technique's traditional name was set.

Practicing both before you actually need them

Neither of these is a knot most anglers tie often enough to stay fluent without occasional deliberate practice - unlike a hook knot tied every outing, a fly-line-to-leader connection might only come up a few times a season. Revisiting the tying steps at home before a trip, rather than assuming muscle memory from months ago will hold up, is worth the ten minutes it takes. Some anglers keep a small laminated diagram of both knots tucked into a fly box specifically for this reason, since even a quick glance can jog a half-remembered wrap sequence back into place before it costs a fish. Tying either one enough times that the hands remember the motion even when the mind is distracted by a fighting fish is really the end goal worth working toward, and it's a goal reached through repetition far more reliably than through reading about either technique.

When to choose neither of these knots at all

If the fly line already has a factory loop and you're simply attaching a new leader, neither the albright nor the nail knot is even necessary - a loop-to-loop connection handles it faster and just as securely. Both of these knots only become relevant once that factory loop is missing, damaged, or was never built into the line in the first place, which is worth checking before assuming either one is genuinely needed for the job at hand.
