The knot picker takes a short set of real, practical inputs — the task, the rope material, whether the situation is life-safety, whether the knot needs to come apart again easily — and narrows the site's full roster down to a short, ranked shortlist, the same underlying logic this site's use-case and activity hubs apply, but interactive and specific to your own combination of answers rather than a fixed, pre-written list.
The step player walks through a chosen knot's exact tying sequence one step at a time, at your own pace, so you can pause on a tricky tuck or repeat a step as many times as it takes rather than working from a single static diagram alone. Have an actual length of cord in hand while you use it — the point is to tie along with each step, not just scroll through it once.
The rope-length estimator helps answer a question that comes up constantly in practice and rarely gets a straight answer: how much rope a given knot and a given job actually consumes, so you're not caught short mid-project or cutting a length that turns out too short once a knot's own working length is accounted for.
None of the three replace the deeper, genuinely-researched prose on each knot's own page — they're built to work alongside it, for the parts of learning a knot that a static page alone can't fully carry.
When to reach for which tool
Use the knot picker first, when you're not yet sure which knot you actually need — it's the fastest route from "I have a rope problem" to a short, ranked shortlist without reading through multiple task hubs by hand. The rope-length estimator solves a different, more practical problem: buying or cutting the right amount of rope before you start, rather than discovering mid-project that a knot's own working length (the portion consumed by the knot itself, distinct from the length actually available for use) has left you short. This matters more than it sounds — a bowline tied in the standard way consumes noticeably more working length than, say, a simple overhand loop, and multiplying that consumption across several knots in a single project (anchoring one end, joining a splice, finishing with a stopper knot) adds up fast if it isn't accounted for ahead of time.
