Both are load-bearing loops trusted in climbing, but they solve genuinely different structural problems - one is built for mid-rope use with no free end, the other for tying in at an end.

The real dividing line is whether the rope has a free end available at all when the loop is tied. The alpine butterfly is built to be tied entirely from the middle of a rope, with both ends already committed elsewhere - a structural requirement that also happens to give it the ability to take a pull from any of three directions without distorting, since it isn't anchored to one particular end's geometry the way an end-tied loop is.

A figure-eight loop assumes the opposite condition - a genuine rope end to work with - and its follow-through construction depends on that end being threaded around an anchor or harness, which is exactly why it's built for tying in rather than for a true mid-line point.

Where the alpine butterfly wins

Anywhere you need a loop tied mid-rope with no access to either end - the exact situation a figure-eight loop simply isn't built for - the alpine butterfly is the only practical choice among the two, and its ability to load from either direction without distorting is a genuine structural advantage no figure-eight variant matches.

Where the figure-eight loop wins

At a rope's actual end, where you're tying in to a harness or anchoring the terminal point of the rope, the figure-eight loop's proven shock-load resistance and universal recognition (every partner check is built around spotting a correctly dressed figure-eight) make it the standard, well-tested choice.

Why you wouldn't substitute one for the other

The alpine butterfly isn't meant for a rope's end, and a figure-eight loop can't be tied without access to at least one end - these aren't interchangeable options for the same job, they're each the only real answer for their specific situation.

The honest verdict

Ask whether you have a free rope end or not. With a free end for a tie-in or anchor point, use the figure-eight loop. With no free end - a mid-rope anchor, a traverse point - the alpine butterfly loop is the knot built specifically for that job, and nothing else on this comparison does it as reliably.

Why the alpine butterfly's three-way loading matters so much

It's worth being specific about why the alpine butterfly's ability to load from either standing part or the loop itself, without distorting, is such a genuinely rare property among loop knots. Most fixed loops, including the figure-eight, are built with an implicit assumption about which direction the load will come from, and loading them a different way - a phenomenon sometimes called cross-loading - can quietly reduce their effective strength even when the knot looks fine. The alpine butterfly was specifically developed to remove that assumption entirely, which is exactly why it remains trustworthy on a traverse anchor where the actual direction of pull can genuinely change as a climber moves along the rope.

What happens if you try to tie a figure-eight loop mid-rope instead

A figure-eight loop tied mid-rope, without a true end to follow through with, has to be tied as a bight rather than a proper follow-through, which loses some of the security the follow-through technique provides at an actual rope end. It also isn't built to resist the cross-loading a mid-rope anchor point might see nearly as well as the alpine butterfly is - which is the concrete, mechanical reason experienced climbers reach for the alpine butterfly specifically rather than improvising a mid-rope figure-eight loop when the situation calls for a true mid-line anchor point.

The dressing check unique to the alpine butterfly

A well-dressed alpine butterfly loop shows three distinct, evenly-spaced strands emerging from a compact central knot with no crossed or pinched sections - a loosely dressed version can look superficially similar while actually being prone to slipping under an off-axis pull, which is exactly the failure mode this knot is otherwise meant to resist. Taking the extra few seconds to snug every strand evenly before trusting weight to it is worth the habit.

A use the figure-eight loop simply can't replicate

Beyond mid-rope anchoring, the alpine butterfly has one more genuinely distinct job: isolating a damaged or worn section of rope. Tied so that the weak or chafed section sits inside the loop itself rather than in either standing part, it takes that compromised section fully out of the load path while the rest of the rope carries tension normally - a real field fix for a rope that's shown surface damage mid-length but can't be replaced immediately. A figure-eight loop has no comparable use, since its follow-through construction has no way to isolate a section of rope that isn't at the very end.

Untying after a hard fall - a real practical gap between them

A figure-eight loop that's taken a genuinely hard fall can jam tight enough to need real effort, sometimes a marlinspike or a solid stomp on the strands, to work loose again. The alpine butterfly, even after a hard load, tends to stay noticeably easier to untie by hand, since its three-strand structure distributes the jamming force differently than the figure-eight's follow-through tuck does - a real, practical advantage anytime the loop will need to be untied and retied repeatedly through a long climbing or work day rather than tied once and left.
