The technique wraps the line around the spool arbor, ties an overhand knot around the standing line, then a second overhand knot in the tag end itself a short distance further along - when the standing line is pulled, the first knot slides down and jams against the spool while the second knot, unable to pass back through the first, locks the whole arrangement in place.

Because this knot never sees real fishing tension - everything below it stays wound on the spool, and everything above it is what actually connects to terminal tackle - there's no meaningful strength rating to speak of. The only real requirement is that it grips the smooth plastic or metal arbor tightly enough not to spin free when line is first pulled off under load.

A quick pre-cast check is worth the few seconds it takes: after tying off and before spooling begins in earnest, give the tag end a firm final tug to confirm both overhand knots have actually jammed together rather than merely sitting close to one another, since a knot that looks snug but hasn't truly locked can still slip a few inches under the first hard hookset - a minor annoyance on a practice cast, but a genuine problem if it happens on a fish worth landing.

Unlike most other fishing knots on this site, the arbor knot has essentially no competing variants or regional alternatives - anglers occasionally substitute a simple uni knot around the spool instead, but the double-overhand arbor knot remains the near-universal default precisely because there's so little to gain from a more complex technique for a connection that never bears real fishing load in the first place.
