The barrel hitch is a way of getting a rope around a barrel or drum so it can be hoisted upright, and its construction is much simpler than it looks. The barrel stands on the middle of the rope. An overhand knot is tied loosely across the top, then worked open - spread apart until its two parts come down around the barrel's sides and encircle it. The two ends are joined above with a bowline, and that bowline becomes the hoisting eye.

There is no clever mechanical catch involved. The spread overhand knot holds by friction against the barrel's sides, helped by the squeeze that the load itself applies as the rope takes weight. That means the hitch's security is not really a property of the knot at all - it is a property of where the rope sits on the barrel, which is why the placement steps matter more here than the tying does.

Two placement rules carry the whole thing. The encircling rope has to sit well above the barrel's centre of gravity, because a rope below it lets the barrel tip and spill the moment it leaves the ground. It also has to sit far enough below the rim that it cannot slide up and off the top as the load settles. Between those two limits there is a band that works, and outside it the hitch does not.

The third check is the one people skip: the rope must be centred squarely under the barrel's base. A rope running off to one side lifts the barrel crooked, and a crooked barrel is a barrel working its way out of the hitch.

The genuine advantage over a barrel sling is narrower and more specific than it is often made out to be, and it is worth knowing precisely. Nothing in a barrel hitch passes over the top of the barrel. That makes it usable on an open barrel or container holding liquid, where a sling that crosses the top simply cannot be rigged. For a closed drum, a sling is the more straightforward choice.

None of this makes it a lifting method in the engineering sense. It is a traditional rope technique, and it carries no rating, no inspection regime and no safety factor. For anything heavy, a rated sling is the right answer. Whatever is being lifted, nobody should stand or pass beneath a suspended load - the barrel hitch is worth learning as a piece of practical rope craft, not as a substitute for proper lifting equipment.

How to tie the Barrel Hitch

  1. 1Lay the rope out and stand the barrel upright on its middle, so equal lengths run out either side.
