Towing a barge or working alongside another vessel puts genuinely enormous tension on a towline - tension that can't simply be untied in one motion the way a docked recreational boat's line can, because releasing it all at once under that kind of load would be dangerous and uncontrollable. Professional tugboat and lighter crews developed their own method specifically to allow controlled, gradual release: an arrangement on a post or bollard that can be eased turn by turn rather than released as a single knot.
It is not a cleat pattern at all, and that distinction matters practically rather than pedantically: it is tied on a bollard, post or winch head with an accessible top, because the method depends on dropping bights over that top. You cannot tie it on a horned cleat. Nor is any knot tied. After a round turn, successive bights are passed under the standing part and dropped over the post, alternating sides - usually three of them. Each bight is held closed by the standing part lying across it, and the whole arrangement is undone by lifting bights off one at a time.

How to tie the Lighterman's Hitch
- 1Take a round turn around the base of the bollard or post.
- 2Form a bight in the rope, pass it under the standing part, and drop it over the top of the post.
- 3Form the next bight on the other side of the standing part and drop that over the post too, so the bights alternate sides.
- 4Add a third bight the same way - three is the usual number for a heavily loaded towline.
- 5To ease the load, lift the bights back off the post one at a time, letting the round turn's friction hold the rest.
