A plain clove hitch grips well against a pull perpendicular to the object it's tied around, but slides if pulled along that object's length - exactly the situation sailors face attaching a second line to a taut rope to take a load off it, or riggers face attaching a rope to a smooth spar that needs to be dragged lengthwise. The rolling hitch adds one extra turn to the clove hitch's basic pattern, specifically arranged so the hitch bites hard against a lengthwise pull while still being slid by hand in the opposite direction.

The key is where the extra turns ride: two turns stacked on the load side of the standing part, rather than the clove hitch's evenly split turns, concentrate the grip exactly where it's needed to resist a pull along the rope or spar's length. Get that side wrong and the hitch loses much of its advantage over a plain clove hitch.

Sailors have long used it to transfer load off a strained line - tying a second rope on with a rolling hitch lets that second rope take the strain while the first is freed, worked, or replaced. It's equally at home securing a rope to a smooth pole or a second line running parallel, wherever a lengthwise-pulling grip specifically matters more than a perpendicular one.

It does have a genuine limitation on very slick surfaces - some coated modern ropes and smooth-finished spars offer less friction than the traditional laid rope and wood the hitch was developed for, and the grip can be measurably weaker there than tradition assumes. In genuinely high-friction demand (taking real load off a strained line under a boat's own weight, for instance), riggers sometimes add an extra turn beyond the standard pattern specifically to compensate for a slicker-than-usual surface.

The rolling hitch shares its underlying friction-hitch family with knots like the prusik and Klemheist, which use a separate loop of cord wrapped repeatedly around a main rope to grip and hold under load while sliding freely when unweighted - the rolling hitch is the older, simpler ancestor of that idea, using a single continuous rope rather than a pre-tied loop, and grips directionally rather than symmetrically in every direction the way a true prusik does.

Sailors specifically favor the rolling hitch over a taut-line hitch when the working rope diameter is closer to, or thicker than, the rope it's being tied around, since the taut-line hitch's friction mechanism depends more on a meaningful difference in diameter between the two ropes than the rolling hitch's directional-grip mechanism does. Two ropes of similar diameter, one taking load off the other during a sail change or a line-handling maneuver, is a genuinely common situation where the rolling hitch's design specifically earns its place over its camping-oriented cousin.

How to tie the Rolling Hitch

  1. 1Lay the working end alongside the standing rope or spar it will grip, pointing the direction the load will pull.
  2. 2Wrap the working end around the rope or spar twice, with both turns riding on the load side of the standing part.
  3. 3Cross the working end over to the other side and add one more turn, this time on the far side of the standing part.
  4. 4Tuck the working end under itself to lock the final turn, similar to finishing a clove hitch.
  5. 5Snug all the turns down so they sit tightly against each other with no gaps.
  6. 6Test by pulling the standing part in the load direction - the hitch should grip and resist sliding, while sliding freely if pushed the opposite way.

Strength & security

The extra riding turns bite specifically against a pull along the length of the object it's tied to, giving it a genuine directional grip a plain clove hitch lacks - it holds firmly when pulled the way it's dressed for, and can be slid by hand when pulled the other way.

Cautions: It must be dressed with the riding turns on the side the pull comes from, or it will not grip as intended. More seriously, it will not hold at all in slippery modern fibres - Dyneema, Spectra and polypropylene - and it slips under load on smooth synthetics and stainless. Adding a turn does not fix this. On those materials use a different method, and test any unfamiliar line under a light load first.

It can be untied and re-tied facing the other direction if the expected load direction changes, but it isn't reversible in place - the riding turns have to be re-dressed on the correct side for the new pull direction, not simply flipped.

Is the rolling hitch related to the prusik knot?

They're both friction hitches from the same broader family, but the rolling hitch uses a single continuous rope and grips directionally, while a prusik uses a separate pre-tied loop that grips symmetrically in any direction - related mechanisms built for different jobs.
