Step Player
This is the site's signature tool, and it's the same component that powers the diagram on every one of the 100 individual knot pages — pick a knot here, or land on this tool from a knot's own page, and you get the identical step-by-step sequencer either way. Rather than one static image trying to show an entire knot's construction at once (usually a tangle that's hard to read at a glance), the Step Player breaks the tying sequence into discrete, numbered steps you move through one at a time, at your own pace, forward or backward.
Every step comes from that knot's own real diagram data — the same rope-path geometry drawn fresh for that specific knot, never traced or copied from anywhere else. Where a knot's diagram has that geometry fully drawn, you get an actual line drawing of the rope at that exact stage of the tie. Where the artwork for a given step hasn't been drawn yet (a fair number of the roster still has accurate, detailed captions with the SVG art queued for a later pass), you get the same real instructional text as a large, clearly numbered step instead — never a spinner, a broken image icon, or a "coming soon" placeholder. Either way you're reading genuine, knot-specific instruction, not a generic stand-in.
The player has four controls: step back, step forward, autoplay (which advances automatically every couple of seconds so you can watch the whole sequence unfold hands-free before trying it yourself), and replay (which jumps back to step one). All four are large enough to hit reliably with a thumb, and the same controls respond to the left/right arrow keys on a keyboard, plus Home and End to jump to the first or last step. On the knot's own page, the player sits right where the diagram always has, so nothing about the layout changes — it's just interactive now instead of a static grid.

How it works
Pick any knot from the dropdown below (it lists the full written roster) and the player loads that knot's real step sequence, starting at step one. Use Prev/Next to move one step at a time, tap Autoplay to watch the whole sequence run automatically, or Replay to jump back to the start. Switching knots in the dropdown resets the player to step one of the new knot's sequence. On desktop, the arrow keys do the same job as the on-screen buttons once the player has focus.
FAQ
Why do some knots show a big number instead of a line drawing?
That step's real rope-path artwork hasn't been drawn yet — the caption is still the genuine, specific instruction for that step, just without the SVG frame. The site tracks which knots have full artwork and is filling in the rest over time; nothing here is a placeholder image standing in for missing content.
Is this the same tool used on the individual knot pages?
Yes — it's the exact same component, not a separate simplified version. Whatever you see here for a given knot is identical to what you'd see on that knot's own page.
Does autoplay loop forever?
No — it stops automatically at the last step so you're not stuck watching it cycle. Tap Replay to run through the sequence again from the start.
