These aren't really alternatives to each other - they solve two different halves of rope work, and understanding that difference matters more than picking a favorite.

The clearest way to see why these two rarely get confused for real alternatives is to ask who's actually doing the gripping. With the munter hitch, a person's hand is the variable: flipped through a locking carabiner, it generates friction that a belayer actively modulates moment to moment, feeding, holding, or locking off by changing the brake hand's angle and grip. Take the hand away and the munter hitch does nothing on its own - it has no independent judgment about when to hold and when to release.

The prusik flips that entirely: once tied correctly with cord meaningfully thinner than the host rope, it grips or releases automatically based purely on whether it's loaded, with no hand actively deciding anything in the moment. One is a tool a person operates in real time; the other is a mechanism that reacts entirely on its own - which is really the whole story behind why these two get paired together in a system so often rather than compared as genuine rivals.

Where the munter hitch wins

Any job requiring active control - belaying a climber, lowering someone, controlling how fast a rope pays out - calls for the munter hitch specifically because it lets you modulate friction moment to moment with your brake hand, something a static friction hitch simply isn't built to do.

Any job requiring a passive grip that just holds when loaded and releases when not - ascending a rope, a safety backup on a line someone else is controlling, building a hauling system - is exactly what the prusik is built for, and it needs no active hand control to function correctly.

Why they're often used together

A prusik loop rigged below a munter hitch (or a mechanical belay device) as a backup protects against the belayer's hand slipping or letting go entirely - the munter or device does the actively-controlled lowering, while the prusik catches a mistake in that system. Neither should be treated as a substitute for the other; they cover different halves of the same job.

The honest verdict

This comparison exists mainly to clarify that these are complementary tools, not competing ones. Learn the munter hitch for active belaying and lowering, especially as backup knowledge if a mechanical device is ever lost or unavailable. Learn the prusik for passive gripping - ascending, hauling, or backing up a system someone else is actively controlling. Most serious rope work eventually calls for both, often in the same setup.

Where the munter hitch has a genuine limitation the prusik doesn't

One honest weakness of the munter hitch worth knowing: it puts a real twist into the rope with repeated use, which over a long day of lowering or belaying can leave a rope noticeably kinked, occasionally enough to affect how smoothly it feeds afterward. The prusik has no equivalent issue, since it doesn't manipulate the rope's own lay the way a munter hitch's friction mechanism does. This isn't usually a dealbreaker, but it's part of why the munter hitch is often treated as backup or emergency knowledge rather than a first-choice everyday belay method when a proper mechanical device is available.

Learning both in the order that actually matters

Most climbing curricula teach the prusik before the munter hitch, since the prusik's passive grip is simpler to understand and practice safely, while the munter hitch's active, direction-dependent feeding takes more supervised repetition to get genuinely comfortable with. If you're learning both for the first time, there's a reasonable case for starting with the prusik on a fixed line under safe, controlled conditions before moving to the munter hitch's more hands-on, judgment-dependent technique.

Carrying both as a matter of course

Experienced climbers and rope-access technicians alike tend to carry the materials for both regardless of whether they expect to need them - a spare prusik loop clipped somewhere accessible, and enough familiarity with the munter hitch to rig it on any available locking carabiner without hesitation. Neither piece of gear or knowledge is heavy or burdensome to carry, and the rare situation where one or the other becomes genuinely necessary tends to be exactly the situation where having practiced it in advance matters most.

A closing thought on redundancy

Both of these represent exactly the kind of low-weight, high-value backup knowledge that costs almost nothing to carry and practice, yet can matter enormously the one time a primary system fails or goes missing - which is really the strongest argument for learning both well rather than treating either as optional.
