Austrian mountaineer Karl Prusik is generally credited with popularizing this hitch in the 1930s, and it remains named for him nearly a century later because nothing since has quite matched its combination of simplicity and reliability for one specific job: gripping a loaded rope hard enough to bear weight, while still being movable by hand the instant that weight comes off. A loop of cord, wrapped several times around a thicker host rope and dressed flat, does both.
The physics is straightforward friction - the wraps bite into the host rope's surface under load, and the thinner the prusik cord is relative to the host rope, the more effectively it grips. This is why prusik cord is deliberately sized down, typically to around two-thirds the host rope's diameter or less; tie it with cord too close in size and it may simply slide rather than lock.
Its real value shows up in self-rescue: a climber who's fallen into a crevasse or off a fixed rope can ascend using two prusik loops, alternately weighting one while sliding the other, with no other hardware required. That same mechanism makes it a standard backup for rappelling and a core tool in hauling systems, and its bidirectional grip - it holds regardless of which way it's loaded - is a genuine advantage some other friction hitches don't share.

When the cord loop is meaningfully thinner than the host rope - roughly two-thirds its diameter or less - the wraps bite down hard enough to hold body weight the instant it's loaded, yet release completely and slide freely the moment weight comes off.
Cautions: A prusik tied with cord too close in diameter to the host rope, or on a very slick or icy rope, may not grip reliably; always weight-test it before committing full trust, and never use a badly worn or glazed prusik cord.
