Where the classic prusik knot depends on round cord biting against round rope, the klemheist's wrapped, stacked construction cinches down under load regardless of whether the material is round cord or flat tubular webbing, making it the practical choice whenever webbing is what's available.

The tying method wraps a loop of cord or webbing around the climbing rope several times, working upward, then threads the two ends of the loop through each other in a finish similar to a girth hitch. Pulled snug, the stacked wraps grip the rope firmly under load while still sliding freely by hand when unloaded - the defining behavior of any friction hitch.

Its one real limitation compared with the prusik is directionality: the klemheist grips reliably when loaded from the direction it was dressed for, but can slip if the load comes from the opposite direction.
