A freestanding tripod - for hoisting camp gear, hanging a cooking pot, or supporting a shelter's peak - needs three poles that spread apart evenly and stand stably on their own once lashed, which takes a genuine extension of the shear lashing's two-pole hinging principle to three poles instead of two. The tripod lashing achieves that with a wrap across all three poles laid side by side, the middle one deliberately reversed end-for-end before wrapping so that it can be swung through 180 degrees when the tripod is stood up. The wraps can be woven in and out between the poles, or taken as plain turns around all three - both methods are published and taught.

That reversed middle pole is a detail worth understanding, not just following by rote, and the reason is geometric rather than anything to do with the poles' taper. The tripod is formed by swinging the centre spar through a full 180 degrees while the two outer legs open out and cross underneath it. Reversing that middle pole before lashing is what makes the swing land all three butts on the ground together.

Beyond camp cooking and hoisting, a tripod lashing scaled up with stouter poles is the traditional basis for a simple field hoist or gyn - a reminder that the same basic lashing technique scales from a lightweight camp gadget to a genuine field structure, provided the materials scale up to match. A tripod's advantage over shear legs is that it is freestanding: three legs stand stable on their own, where two-legged shears need guy lines to hold them up.

How to tie the Tripod Lashing

  1. 1Lay three poles parallel and side by side, touching along their length, with the middle pole reversed (butt end where the others have their tips, or vice versa).
  2. 2Anchor the cord with a clove hitch around one outer pole.
  3. 3Wrap the cord loosely around all three poles together, weaving over-under-over as you go, seven to eight turns.
  4. 4Take two or three frapping turns in the gap between the first and second poles, then two or three more in the gap between the second and third - running the second set in the opposite direction to the first.
  5. 5Finish with a clove hitch around the opposite outer pole from where you started.
